A REFRESHINGLY GREASY WATERMELON
July 29 Saturday 2006

I know it’s not officially the end of Summer yet, but with the last SCP session coming up on Wednesday, it kind of feels like it. I guess it’s because most of the students are beginning to head back to their respective countries. The only difference this time ‘round is that I won’t be joining them; I’ll be staying in Hong Kong instead, hurrah!

The program(me) has been really good, a slightly different feel from the previous two years, but that's mainly due to the sheer growth in numbers. So whether you were able to make it to SCP this year or not, remember to bookmark the website... we'll definitely be back in 2007!

So what’s with the watermelons? Well, we had our annual SCP Junk Trip last Saturday, where we did the whole swimming, sunbathing, jumping off the boat thing, and the sun was shining (unlike last year click here) – it was beautiful. The highlight for me, however, revolved around a juicy pair of melons; I never realised how much fun you could have with them.

Melons float, and make great swimming buddies, so once we got one of them to the beach we pulled out a jar of Vaseline (Alison’s idea) and greased it up. The rules of  “Greasy-Pig” are quite simple. Divide into two teams and then try and wrestle the “pig” over the other sides goal line – great fun. Unfortunately our pig cracked open after the third goal; but the fun continued when we ripped it apart and had a melon fight!

Of course, the most fun I can think of having with a watermelon (whilst keeping it clean) is slicing it up and masticating on it. A truly refreshing experience, especially after swimming in the sea under the hot sun. In fact the entire junk trip was refreshing; it was refreshing to get away from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong's busy streets, and breathe fresh air for a change.

Whilst the junk trip has changed the way I look at watermelons for good, the SCP program actually changes lives (or to be more precise, God does). Without going into much detail, it's been quite amazing seeing some of my friends respond and have areas of their lives touched by God... and nothing is more refreshing that, huh?
