SO HUNGRY, I COULD EAT A COW
August 30 Wednesday 2006

One of the things I love about this area is all its farmland and livestock. Unfortunately I’ve missed the end of lambing season, but from what I gather, bulls & cows get it on all year ‘round, so there are still lots of little calves running about. They really are cute, and curious too. There’s one in particular that I’ve grown rather fond of... isn't she lovely?

And yet as I watch her frolicking in the field, I can't help wondering how an energetic and adorable little calf like her can turn into such a large, docile and ugly cud chewer. I think animals are so much cuter when they're babies (same could be said for people too). Thankfully these delicious, I mean delightful little calves won't grow into cows, but rather succulent portions of top-grade veal... now isn't that lovely?

I tried the whole "vegetarian" thing once... but we weren't compatible so I dumped her. Only joking, but I did take a girl to an exclusive carvery once, only to discover that she didn't eat meat. Nightmare! Thankfully no-one here is picky about their food and we've been enjoying the local wildlife together, albeit with chopsticks and cutlery in our hands.

All this country air and hard work definitely builds up an appetite... and yes, I do realise that the spade I'm holding is empty; and no, I'm not posing. I am, as my father says, "earning my keep", and loving every minute of it.
